Text Enlargement

UX-Case Study

What started as a personal experience and a challenge I encountered with one of Apple’s AT’s (Assistive tech.) features, the text enlargement customization, turned out as a complete UX case study. I took the time to conduct a full UX research and synthesize outcomes trying to highlight some potential solutions that would resolve this issue.

Project Type: Design Sprint

Client: Personal Project

Duration: 2 weeks

Role: Project Lead, UXR, UXD

Challenge:

Identifying the problem and conducting research to understand weather this was a common issue with other users or weather they encountered other challenges related to the same issue. Gather all insights, analyze them and then turn it into a full case study trying to come up with ideas.

Stating the user journey that led to identifying the problem.

On a normal day I decided to increase the security of my parents emails and decided to change their passwords. Knowing that I live aboard and my parents aren't particularly tech. savvy...so I usually help them step by step.

So the goal was: Changing my parents' email password for extra security
Expected duration: 5 min
Reality: 1 week of frustration

Summing up the user experience.

A simple task that should have been smoothly done in 5 min. with an outcome of a positive feeling and a satisfying experience turned out to be a prolonged frustrating process filled with self doubt, anxiety and time consuming.

Auto hyphenation.

Auto-hyphenation (-) is a text formatting feature that automatically inserts hyphens to break long words at the end of lines to create a more visually appealing and evenly spaced layout in texts.

And by enlarging the system’s font size, the auto-hyphenation is automatically activated, resulting in the addition of this (-) character to break long words on to several line.

which in my case has proven to be a poor and unwise solution in adapting assistive technology to universal smart phones used by various people of different age, needs, culture, education, background…etc

Next steps.

  1. Identify research goal / methodology / target group

  2. Formulate interview questions

  3. Conduct 10 online interviews

Work in progress….
